All About the Flu Shots [2020 Edition]
Author: Dr. Steven Shao (Pharm. D) What is new and different this year/ season (online appointments , questionnaire)?
New - High Dose Flu Shot
This flu shot is ONLY covered for seniors above the age of 65. Though some patient with weaker immunity below 65 may also benefit, these patients are not eligible for coverage and challenges remain to access the high dose flu shot. Speak to your specialist or family doctor about possible access.
Seniors above 65 DO NOT HAVE TO get the high dose flu shot! The regular flu shot will also offer protection and is recommended for seniors who have difficulty accessing the high dose flu shot and is in relatively healthy condition.
Different - Appointments, Wait List, Pre-Fill the Questionnaire
Due to the increase in demand of the flu shot and COVID19, there may be changes at the place where you normally get your flu shot. To find out, call the pharmacy or clinic. Some are doing appointments only, some are doing wait list only with walk ins, and most recommend you filling out the immunization questionnaire before going for the flu shot. In November, one day or multi-day flu clinics could open up in your area at a more convenient location that normally operates on a first come first serve basis.
What is the questionnaire that I need to fill up ?
It is an immunization form that go over your medical condition including but not limited to allergies, previous reactions to flu shot, and medical conditions. This year, COVID19 symptoms screening will also be routine. Patient must answer all questions truthfully (Yes or No) and sign the form before any one can give you the flu shot. You may find the form on the website of many pharmacies or clinics. We recommend filling them out beforehand to save time and reduce exposure time, but if there are challenges, you may also receive the form from the staff when you go in for your flu shot.
What are my options if my family doctor is not doing the shots this year / where can I find places with Mandarin speaking pharmacists/ nurses ?
There are many pharmacists that speak Mandarin who can give you the flu shot at the pharmacy! We recommend calling the nearby pharmacies and ask if there is someone who can speak Mandarin.
Should I take the flu shot if I am not feeling well ? When should I get vaccinated? And if I am allergic to certain things ??
Not Feeling Well
if you are feeling unwell, do not get the flu shot, espeically if you have a fever greater than 39 degrees or have an active infection. Please do not come to the pharmacy or clinic at this time. Due to COVID19, temporary self-isolation and getting a COVID testing is recommended. If there is any questions, feel free to contact your healthcare provider.
When to get Vaccinated
Get vaccinated whenever you can! The effect of the flu shot does wean off over the months so getting it in October may mean the level of protection may not be as strong towards the end the flu season which runs from November to April. Of course, the sooner you get it, the sooner you are protected. Hence, our recommendation is to just get it whenever you can!
Allergy
Are you allergic to kanamycin, neomycin, gentamicin, thimerosal, chicken protein, polymixin or gelatin? Or previously had an allergic reaction to a flu shot? Depending on the severity of the allergy, we will consult your family doctor or allergy specialist prior to any administration of the flu shot. If you are allergic to egg, you are still safe to receive the flu shot based on past datas. If still a concern, then a flu shot free from any trace of egg could be specially ordered for you.
